SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Cascades Inc. has been selected as the winner of the prestigious Food Innovation Award 2017 by the Food Processing Council of Quebec in the Packaging Category. The company’s new insulated fully recyclable paper box ‘northbox’ won the award. Cascades Inc. turned out to be the inaugural winner of the award, since the Packaging Category was added for the first time this year.

Cascades, Inc. had recently developed northbox, as a cool packaging option to ship temperature-sensitive products by mail. The insulation features of the box ensure freshness of the shipped products such as frozen and fresh food till it reaches the customer’s door. The unique insulation technology comprises of a FSC-certified paperboard structure and a reflective lining attached with water-based glue. The liner is designed to enhance the stacking strength of the box making it eligible to shipping to distant locations.

According to the company, the insulator, consisting of two C-shaped paperboard liners, can be made adaptable to seasons and delivery duration, thereby promising freshness of the shipped materials in any environmental condition. For instance, the Level-1 insulator can be used in the case of same-day or overnight next-day deliveries and in mild weather conditions. Meantime, Level-2 insulator can be opted in case of next-day or two-day deliveries and for more extreme hot or cold weather conditions.

Luc Langevin, President and Chief Operating Officer of Cascades Specialty Products Group stated that northbox packaging solution was developed entirely by Cascades in collaboration with its customers. He thanked the remarkable team effort put in by the team in developing high-demand, fully recyclable product that caters to the needs of high-growth markets, mainly e-commerce. He also attributed the development of the product to Cascade’s culture of innovation and its long expertise in eco-packaging design.

Cascades, Inc. is ranked 36th in the 2017 Best 50 Corporate Citizens in Canada ranking according to the Corporate Knights magazine. During this year, the company has received many key accolades.
