US companies restart CRT shipments to Videocon’s India facility
India’s Videocon has begun accepting CRT glass from US supplier companies, after a five-month interruption.
SPOKANE (Scrap Monster): India’s Videocon has begun accepting CRT glass from US supplier companies, after a five-month interruption. According to reports, Videocon’s glass-to-glass recycling facility at Bharuch has once again started accepting CRT glasses from its US counterparts Cali Resources, Glassico and TDM. On the other hand, it is yet to start accepting materials from independent brokers.
Carlos Kelvin, president of Cali Resources welcomed the decision to reopen the recycling facility. He further confirmed that the company has already started shipping 'furnace-ready' and cleaned CRT funnel and panel glass to Videocon. Albino Bessa, president at TDM, also confirmed that Videocon has begun accepting CRT glass once again.
The glass-to-glass recycling facility of Videocon has been a major receiver of CRT glasses from the US. The company used to consume nearly 108,000 tons of CRT glasses per annum, which in turn were used towards manufacturing new CRT televisions. The company had announced abrupt closure of furnaces in October last year in order to perform heavy maintenance activities at both the furnaces and cullet equipment.
In a letter dated Feb 25th, it had informed the US clients that the maintenance activities on its ovens have been completed and that the plant is ready to accept CRT shipments.
The US companies had been sending CRT glass to Mexico for storage, since the closure of Videocon facility. They had also recently begun sending CRT funnel glasses to Camacho, a Spanish company. Now since Videocon has started accepting materials, all the stored CRT glass will now be send to them, noted Kelvin.
Videocon is the only company in the world to make new CRTs by recycling old ones. The Bharuch facility had been a key outlet for US CRTs over the past several years.
