The Owego, NY-based scrap metal recycler Upstate Shredding-Ben Weitsman has announced acquisition of assets of Murtagh Scrap Handling

ALBANY (Scrap Monster): The Owego, NY-based scrap metal recycler Upstate Shredding-Ben Weitsman has announced acquisition of assets of Murtagh Scrap Handling-a family-owned scrap metal recycling business in 7772 Tannery Rd, Rome, NY. The acquisition is expected to be completed by end-January next year.

According to Adam Weitsman, CEO, the company plans to invest nearly $3 million in the acquired facility to lift the standards to higher levels. It plans total renovation of the yard including construction of new buildings, installation of state-of-the-art equipment and installation of new fencing and landscaping. The facility will be turned into the most modern scrap facility in the region within three months, he added.

Further, the scrap yard will be renamed as Ben Weitsman of Rome. All the existing employees of Murtagh Scrap Handling will be retained. In addition, upon becoming fully operational, 10 new jobs will be created.

The acquisition will help Upstate Shredding to expand its presence in the Northeast region. The acquisition comes at a time when the company is undertaking big upgrades at Owego auto shredder facility. The acquired facility will help the company to enhance its supply chain to feed the upgraded shredder facility.

Initially, started as a local company, Upstate Shredding now has a regional network of scrap yards. It currently operates from 18 locations and is the largest privately held scrap metal processor in the East Coast. The company buys scrap metal from public and recycles them into component metals which are then sold to domestic mills and exported overseas.
