ALBANY (Scrap Monster): The City of Buffalo has passed a new law to impose fine up to $100 on residents found dropping unwanted electronics on the curb. The curbside recycling program had stopped collecting e-waste following the New York State regulations which makes disposal of e-waste on the curb illegal. The residents who violate the law will be liable to pay fine. Also, it is illegal for landfills to accept electronic waste.
In order to address the problem of growing e-waste, the City of Buffalo had opened E-waste drop off location at the City of Buffalo Engineering Garage. The collection center located at 1120 Seneca Street will accept e-waste from Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. In addition, the center will also accept e-waste on first Saturday of every month between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m.
The drop-off location will accept wide range of used electronic devices including computer systems, printers, cell phones, fax machines, wires, televisions, video games, VCRs and DVD players, small appliances, microwave ovens and florescent bulbs.
The items not accepted include concrete, devices with liquid mercury, dry and wet cell batteries, hazardous waste, pesticides, yard equipment, gas-powered equipment, radioactive materials and roofing materials.
